ICO raises 2008/09 world coffee crop forecast

LONDON, Dec 5 (Reuters) - World coffee output in 2008/09 is expected to be about 132.5 million 60-kg bags, up from 115.4 million in 2007/08, International Coffee Organization Executive Director Nestor Osorio said on Friday.

Osorio projected last month the 2008/09 crop would total around 131 million bags.

Consumption was also expected to climb.

"Despite the current economic crisis, my estimate of world consumption in 2008 indicates a figure of around 128 million bags," Osorio said in a monthly market review.

Osorio put consumption in 2007 at around 125 million.

He also said a cyclical reduction in Brazil's crop in 2009/10 should reduce production, adding supply should be lower while consumption continues to expand.

"Market fundamentals continue to be favourable to a relative firmness in prices," Osorio said.
