Vietnam's June coffee exports ease 1.3 pct
HANOI, June 26 (Reuters) - Vietnam's coffee exports this month will ease 1.3 percent from last June to 75,000 tonnes, or 1.25 million bags, the government said on Thursday.
Accumulated coffee exports between October 2007 and June 2008 would fall 25 percent to 792,000 tonnes, or 13.2 million 60-kg bags, the government's General Statistic Office said in a monthly report.
Vietnam is the world's second-biggest coffee producer after Brazil and the world's largest producer of robusta beans.
The statistics office revised up actual coffee shipment in May to 73,000 tonnes from its previous estimate of 70,000 tonnes, but did not elaborate on the reason.
The estimated export volume for June would bring Vietnam 's total coffee shipment in the first half of this year to 571,000 tonnes, or 9.52 million bags, a drop of 31.7 percent from the same period in 2007.
Export revenues of the commodity would also fall 4.1 percent to $1.18 billion, the statistics office said.
Vietnam 's coffee stocks may now stand at nearly 4 million bags, after deducting the estimated shipments in the first three quarters of the 2007/2008 crop year, while the crop turned out 18 million bags, based on a Reuters poll in January.
Domestic consumption is stable at 1 million bags a year. Vietnam 's coffee crop year runs from October to September.
The estimated volume left in the country has not included the stock carried over from the previous 2006/2007 crop year, which would be at least 80,000 tonnes, traders said.
Farmers often keep part of their robusta beans for sale or to blend with fresh coffee in October and early November before they pick the harvest from late November.
Traders forecast Vietnam would harvest a bumper crop in the Central Highlands thanks to sufficient water supply and higher prices that prompted farmers to take more care of their trees. Coffee prices have risen about 30 percent in the past year.
he upcoming harvest is forecast to turn in 20 percent more or a total of 20.8 million bags to 21.7 million bags, they said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has forecast Vietnam 's 2008/2009 crop to rise 23 percent to 21.5 million bags.
